Week 30 – 5-5-5 Plan – Theme – Learning

Monday: I’m so excited about this weeks topic – it’s Learning! I’m in the Ls you know!

The reason learning excites me is because as I learn, as I seek, as I discover I become better, more interesting and more valuable to others – and to myself – one of my favorite things in life is to learn – and for me – to learn things twice or more as I teach and share.

Quote: Harvey Ullman said this about learning, “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether this happens at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps on learning not only remains young, but becomes constantly more valuable regardless of physical capacity.”

Roll Call

Word: Languish (of a person or other living thing) lose or lack vitality; grow weak or feeble – sometimes people languish after college and don’t’ continue to learn

Go make it a Magnificent Day!

Tuesday:

Quote: Daniel Bell said this, “To think of learning as a preparation for something beyond learning is a defeat of the process. The most important attitude that can be formed is that of desire to go on learning,”

Word: Lanyard: a cord passed around the neck, shoulder, or wrist for holding a knife, whistle, or similar object. A cord attached to a breech mechanism for firing a gun – how I know it is a name tag lanyard – things change!

You Create Your Day by the way You Think! Be Present!

Go make it a Magnificent Day!

Wednesday:

Quote: William J.H. Boetcker said this “Most men believe that it would benefit them if they could get a little from those who have more. How much more would it benefit them if they would learn a little from those who know more.”

Word: Largo – in a slow tempo and dignified in style – and I only thought Key Largo – a place – now maybe we know what it’s known for –

You Create Your Day by the way You Think! Be Present!

Go make it a Magnificent Day!

Thursday:

Quote: Lord Chesterfield gave us this good advice, “Never seem wiser or more learned than the company you are with. Treat your learning like a watch and keep it hidden. Do not pull it out to count the hours, but give the time when you are asked.”

I liked this because it was a good reminder to me to be a listener – that I learn more then and I don’t offend – Story of giving advice to help young speaker and it not going well…

Word: Lamentable – (of circumstances or conditions) deplorably bad or unsatisfactory – it’s lamentable how few people really embrace learning!

You Create Your Day by the way You Think! Be Present!

Go make it a Magnificent Day!

Friday:

Quote: It seems I spend Friday’s giving a series of short quotes – my day to fill your brain with variety…

Henry Adams said this, “They know enough who know how to learn.”

An Arabian proverb states this: “Learning is a treasury whose keys are queries.”

And lastly a piece of advice from M.M. Coady: “The man who has ceased to learn ought not to be allowed to wander around loose in these dangerous days.”

Word: Legend – a traditional story sometimes popularly regarded as historical but unauthenticated – the legend of King Arthur. Also – an extremely famous or notorious person esp. in a particular field. – like – “A legend in his own mind!”

Joke of the week:

The phone rings at FBI headquarters. “Hello?”

“I’m calling to report my neighbor.
He is hiding marijuana inside his firewood.”

“Thank you very much for the call, sir.”

The  next day, FBI agents descend on the neighbor’s house.
They search the shed where the firewood is kept.
Using axes, they bust open every piece of wood, but find no marijuana.
They swear at the neighbors and leave.

The phone rings at the neighbors house.
Hey, Adrian, did the FBI come?”

“Yep.”

“Did they chop your firewood?”

“Yep.”

“Great, now it’s your turn to call. I need my garden plowed.”

Leadership Week July 26, 2008

Week 29 – 5-5-5 Plan – Theme – Leadership

Monday:

I’m excited to be sharing quotes this week on leadership – what I have come to know is that we are all leaders – and firstly, leaders of ourselves. When we can lead ourselves we can then think or determine if we can lead others – what an option, what a wonder –

So today’s quote is for leading – others and self – it’s short – it makes a point – I feel that leadership is always about how we are for ourselves and others so here is our first quote on leadership:

Quote: By James Crook – who said, “A man (person) who wants to lead the orchestra must turn his back on the crowd.”

Wow! – Turning his back on the crowd – means you do what is right for you, for others – regardless of what is popular! This is a group of leaders!

Word: Labyrinth – a complicated irregular network of passages or paths in which it is difficult to find one’s way: a maze – an intricate and confusing arrangement – which is what leadership is sometimes –

Go make it a Magnificent Day!

Tuesday:

Quote: William J.H. Boetcker said this about leadership: “The man who is worthy of being a leader of men will never complain about the stupidity of his helpers, the ingratitude of mankind nor the in appreciation of the public. These are all a part of the great game of life. To meet them and overcome them and not to go down before them in disgust, discouragement or defeat –that is the final proof of power.”

That first line is the best – a person who is worthy of being a leader of men will never complain about his helpers – never complain is really a key.

Word: Laconic – (of a person, speech, or style of writing) using very few words –

You Create Your Day by the way You Think! Be Present!

Go make it a Magnificent Day!

Wednesday:

Quote: Stanley C. Allyn said, “Leadership involves remembering past mistakes, an analysis of today’s achievements, and a well-grounded imagination in visualizing the problem of the future.”

Basically a person who can think – and don’t I stress this a lot?

Word: Lactose – which simply means a sugar present in milk – which surprised me – I thought it meant milk in general – so there you go!

You Create Your Day by the way You Think! Be Present!

Go make it a Magnificent Day!

Thursday:

Quote: Along the same theme of thinking… gives us today’s leadership quote from James Byrnes who said, “Trained and inspired leadership is needed in the troubled world of today. We live in uncertainty and fear. The times call for thinking and straight thinking – one of the goals of true education.

Unfortunately, the world so clamors for action that men and women devote little time to thinking. Many believe in second-hand thinking. They find it easier to ascertain and adopt the thought of others than to think for themselves.”

This makes me think of how the media spins things, how fear can infiltrate our minds with thoughts of lack, war, worry – When you only fill your mind with ideas, with solutions, with hope and opportunity those are the things that grow -

Word: Laggard, a person who makes slow progress and falls behind others – so many people are laggards in regards to thinking or in leadership!

You Create Your Day by the way You Think! Be Present!

Go make it a Magnificent Day!

Friday:

Quote: I’ve decided to share a variety of my favorite and short quotes on leadership so here they are:

Napoleon Bonaparte said this wonderful thing about leadership: “A leader is a dealer in hope.”

W. Fusselman said, “To-day a reader, to-morrow a leader.”

John Seaman Garns said, “Real leaders are ordinary people with extraordinary determinations.”

And Jules Ormont said, “A great leader never sets himself above his followers except in carrying responsibilities.”

Word: la di da – pretentious or snobbish, esp. in manner or speech – and here’s the fun part – I thought it was – La ti da – so I’m inept at snobbish!

Joke of the week:

I was walking past the mental hospital the other day and all the patients were chanting and shouting, “Thirteen!  Thirteen!  Thirteen!  Thirteen!  Thirteen! Thirteen . . .”

I was curious to see what they were so excited about, but the fence was too high to see over.

Then I saw a little gap in the planks and looked through to see what was going on.

Some idiot poked me in the eye with a stick -

and they all started shouting “Fourteen!  Fourteen!  Fourteen!  Fourteen!  Fourteen! . . .”

Week 28 – 5-5-5 Plan – Theme – Joy

Monday: This week’s theme is joy – it’s a joy to share this theme with you! Also it was a joy looking up quotes and it’s also a joy to have these morning calls with all of you! Thank you!

So here is something I discovered – all the above tasks are tasks I’ve been doing the whole year – and it’s been wonderful – however I don’t know if I infused the tasks with joy – I may have – I live in that state a lot – however when we are conscious of it – when we pause even for a second and recognize joy it makes things so much sweeter.

Focus on joy this 28th week of 2008 – see what happens!

Quote: Robert Southey once said, “The very society of joy redoubles it; so that, while it lights upon my friend, it rebounds upon myself, and the brighter his candle burns, the more easily will it light mine.”

Word: Jangle – to make or cause to make a ringing metallic sound – I’ve got spurs that jingle, jangle jingle – as I go riding merrily along….

You Create Your Day by the way You Think! Be Present!

Go make it a Magnificent Day!

Tuesday:

Quote: George Bernard Shaw said this about joy, “There is a true joy of life; to be used by a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; to be thoroughly worn out before being thrown on the scrap heap; to be a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that life will not devote itself to making you happy.”

This is a group that can not be accused of being selfish and complaining of ailments – you are creating your life by the way you think and thinking well! Bravo!

Word: jardinière – and ornamental pot or stand for the display of growing plants – pretty fancy!

You Create Your Day by the way You Think! Be Present!

Go make it a Magnificent Day!

Wednesday:

Quote: Percy Bysshe Shelley said this, “When the power of imparting joy is equal to the will, the human soul requires no other heaven.”

Listen to this again – The power of imparting joy – we have the power of imparting joy – to ourselves, to others, to the world – what joy can you spread today?

Word: Jocular – fond of or characterized by joking: humorous or playful: she sounded in a jocular mood – this word to me is misplaced – jocular sounds like men’s sports equipment!

You Create Your Day by the way You Think! Be Present!

Go make it a Magnificent Day!

Thursday:

Quote: A short quote this morning from John Ray who said, “A joy that’s shared is a joy made double.”

Doing the Create Your Ultimate Year today will be a joy and a joy shared – I am so blessed to present and share wisdom with others – what a blessing that I am grateful for!

Word: Jovian – (In Roman mythology) of or like the god Jove (or Jupiter) – of or relating to the planet Jupiter or the class of giant planets to which Jupiter belongs – By Jove! – Jove is another name for Jupiter

You Create Your Day by the way You Think! Be Present!

Go make it a Magnificent Day!

Friday:

Quote: Our final quote this week on joy is from Frederick William Faber who said, “There are souls in this world which have the gift of finding joy everywhere and of leaving it behind them when they go.”

This is a call to action for us – we can be those souls that find joy everywhere and then leaving it behind as we go knowing that we’ll find it again and again – Wowzer!

Word: Jollification – lively celebration with others; merry-making – it’s that joy!

Joke for Friday

Unbreakable

A salesman was demonstrating unbreakable combs in a department store. He was impressing the people who stopped by to look by putting the comb through all sorts of torture and stress.

Finally to impress even the skeptics in the crowd, he bent the comb completely in half, and it snapped with a loud crack. Without missing a beat, he bravely held up both halves of the ‘unbreakable’ comb for everyone to see and said, “And this, ladies and gentlemen, is what an unbreakable comb looks like on the inside.”

Knowledge Week 27 July 11, 2008

Week 27 – 5-5-5 Plan – Theme – Knowledge

Monday: This week the theme is knowledge – something good and interesting for this mid summer time – since a lot of us do more reading this time of year – I loved the quotes for this week – there were many to choose from – here is our first…

Quote: This quote is from George Matthew Adams who said, “You are your greatest investment. The more you store in that mind of yours, the more you enrich your experience, the more people you meet, the more books you read, and the more places you visit, the greater is that investment in all that you are. Everything that you add to your peace of mind, and to your outlook upon life, is added capital that no one but yourself can dissipate.

Word: Knowledge – facts, information, and skills acquired by a person through experience or education: the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject –

However above it was the word: Knowing and that definition is: showing or suggesting that one has knowledge or awareness that is secret or known to only a few people – so I seek to have knowledge and also knowing – to go deeper   - because I/we can!

Go make it a Magnificent Day!

Tuesday:

Quote: Thomas Arnold once said, “Real knowledge, like everything else of the highest value, is not to be obtained easily. It must be worked for, studied for, thought for, and, more than all, it must be prayed for.”

I liked this because prayer is such a big part of my life however I don’t know if I’ve thought about praying for knowledge – and why wouldn’t I?

Word: Kickapoo – a member of an American Indian people formerly living in Wisconsin, and now in Kansas, Oklahoma, and north central Mexico.

You Create Your Day by the way You Think! Be Present!

Go make it a Magnificent Day!

Wednesday:

Quote: Lord Chesterfield gave us today’s quote – and I am altering it slightly so be more genderless – instead of the word, men, I have substituted the word people – it doesn’t alter the lesson-  “Learning is acquired by reading books; but the much more necessary learning, the knowledge of the world, is only to be acquired by reading people, and studying all the various editions of them.”

Isn’t that a lovely way to say be observant, to look and listen and discover what others, all others have to teach?

Word: Kremlin – a citadel within a Russian town. (the Kremlin) the citadel in Moscow. The Russian or (formerly USSR government housed within this citadel.

So I looked up citadel – which is: a fortress, typically on high ground, protecting or dominating a city.

You Create Your Day by the way You Think! Be Present!

Go make it a Magnificent Day!

Thursday:

Quote: Franklin P. Adams said something that happens to me often – especially in doing these 5:15 calls – he said, “I find that a great part of the information I have was acquired by looking up something and finding something else on the way.”

I have been amazed and delighted how that happens – and it only happens when I’ve been seeking something – so it’s not the discovery that is the greatest gift – it’s the journey to find –

Word: Kaput – broken and useless; no longer working or effective. I always thought that was just my dads saying! “Well, that went kaput!”

You Create Your Day by the way You Think! Be Present!

Go make it a Magnificent Day!

Friday:

Quote: A couple of fun short quote on Knowledge –

“Knowledge is free at the library. Just bring your own container.” Anonymous

And Anonymous also said this which I like, “Say what you mean, mean what you say, but don’t say it mean.”

Such good advice!

Word: Karma – coming from Hinduism and Buddhism – the sum of a person’s actions in this and previous states of existence, viewed as deciding their fate in future existences. – also destiny or fate, following as effect from cause.

Joke of the week:

It’s Simple

The truth is that if you take a little time to learn a few basic principles and some of the technical lingo, buying the right computer and getting it to work properly is no more complicated than building a nuclear reactor from wristwatch parts in a darkened room using only your teeth. So let’s get started!

Week 25 June 30 – July 3 – No July 4 session on Friday – 5-5-5 Plan – Theme – Imagination

Monday: This week’s theme is Imagination – and what a wonderful gift our imagination is! Everything we have and experience has been brought about through the imagination of those that have gone before us and all new technology and design is brought to us through others imagination – and we can do the same – from the imagination springs the future we have yet to create but can. It’s an exciting time to be alive!

Quote: Ernest Newman said this about imagination, “The great composer does not set to work because he is inspired, but becomes inspired because he is working. Beethoven, Wagner, Bach and Mozart settled down day after day to the job in hand with as much regularity as an accountant settles down each day to his figures. They didn’t waste time waiting for inspiration.”

Use your imagination – like all things it gets stronger the more you use it – so use it every day!

Word: Advocate – to support, or be in favor of – I am a strong advocate of imagination!

You Create Your Day by the way You Think! Be Present!

Go make it a Magnificent Day!

Tuesday:

Quote: Harry Emerson Fosdick said, “The very core of peace and love is imagination. All altruism springs form putting yourself in the other person’s place.”

When we can imagine what it must be like – to hurt or be without – we can begin to act on our compassion – and that is our imagination!

Extra quote on Patriotism:

“Patriotic talk is no proof of patriotism. Anyone can wave a flag. The real patriot lives his patriotism in everything he does.” John Devine

Word: aggrandize – to make great – when we visualize – we can aggrandize our life, dreams and options all with our imagination! Aggrandize your thoughts this day!

You Create Your Day by the way You Think! Be Present!

Go make it a Magnificent Day!

Wednesday:

Quote: Philip Conley said this, “Your imagination has much to do with your life. It pictures beauty, success, desired results. On the other hand, it brings into focus ugliness, distress, and failure. It is for you to decide how you want your imagination to serve you.”

What we think about comes about – what are you imagining? The best or the worst?

Patriotism quote: Patriotism is easy to understand in America. It means looking out for yourself by looking out for your country.” Calvin Coolidge -

Word: Altruistic – unselfish concern with the welfare of others – it’s wonderful when we do things for altruistic reasons –

You Create Your Day by the way You Think! Be Present!

Go make it a Magnificent Day!

Thursday:

Quote: Leigh Hunt believes this – “There are two worlds: the world that we can measure with line and rule, and the world that we feel with our hearts and imagination.”

The world that we feel –

Feeling mingled with imagination – look out!

Word: Acquiesce – to comply passively, to give in –

So I’m thinking – I may acquiesce to you in my behavior however I’m not giving in inside my mind – I control and regulate my imagination – but I will acquiesce and give you your way right now.

You Create Your Day by the way You Think! Be Present!

Go make it a Magnificent Day!

Friday:

Quote: Our final quote this week on imagination comes form Henry Taylor who said, “Imagination lit every lamp in this country, produced every article we use, built every church, made every discovery, performed every act of kindness and progress, created more and better things for more people. It is the priceless ingredient for a better day.”

Your imagination – it’s what makes your life – because you create it – in your imagination!

Word: Affinity – sympathy, attraction, kinship – when a person has affinity for something or someone – they help them or hang out with them. I have an affinity for people who want to improve their lives – you!

Patriotism quote: George Bernard Shaw said, “Patriotism: Your conviction that this country is superior to all other countries because you were born in it.”
